Ankle & Achilles Ultrasound Scan – MedHealth Ultrasound

Our Ankle & Achilles Ultrasound Scan provides a detailed assessment of the key musculoskeletal structures around the ankle joint, including the Achilles tendon. It is a quick, comfortable and highly effective way to investigate pain, swelling, instability or injury.

What the Ankle Scan Includes

  • Same-day verbal results discussed with you before you leave

  • Digital written ultrasound report within 24–48 hours

  • Performed by experienced MSK sonographers

  • High-resolution imaging to pick up subtle changes early

Objective of the Ankle Scan

The aim of the Ankle & Achilles Ultrasound Scan is to provide a clear, real-time evaluation of the main structures in and around the ankle joint. The ankle is a complex weight-bearing joint, made up of bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles and joint spaces that work together for balance and movement.

Using high-frequency ultrasound, we can look inside the ankle to identify inflammation, tears, degenerative changes and other causes of pain or instability. The scan is painless, safe and completely radiation-free. Your sonographer will explain the findings to you at the end of the examination.

What the Ankle Ultrasound Can Assess

  • Achilles tendon

  • Peroneal tendons

  • Extensor tendons

  • Flexor tendons

  • Anterior ankle joint space

  • Ankle and subtalar joints

  • Retrocalcaneal bursa

  • Major ankle ligaments

  • Lateral ankle ligaments (e.g. ATFL)

What Is an Ankle Ultrasound Scan?

An ankle ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the soft tissues and joint structures around the ankle. It is particularly valuable for assessing:

  • Ligament sprains and tears

  • Tendon inflammation and degeneration

  • Bursal inflammation

  • Joint effusions and synovitis

  • Soft tissue lumps or masses

Ankle injuries are very common, especially in active adults and athletes. Problems may be acute (after a twist, fall or sudden movement) or chronic (linked to overuse, repetitive strain or previous injury). Ultrasound helps identify the exact structure involved so treatment can be more targeted.

Why Might I Need an Ankle Scan?

You may benefit from an Ankle & Achilles scan if you have:

  • Ankle injury or sprain

  • Ongoing ankle pain

  • Swelling around the ankle or Achilles

  • Pain when walking, running or changing direction

  • Reduced ankle stability (giving way)

  • Reduced range of movement

  • Localised discomfort or tenderness

  • Warmth, redness or inflammation

  • A lump around the ankle or heel

  • Post-surgical concerns

  • Possible foreign body in the soft tissues

You do not need a GP referral to book this scan.

What Can the Ankle Scan Detect?

Our ankle ultrasound can help diagnose:

  • Ankle sprains and ligament tears

  • Tendonitis and tendinopathy

  • Tenosynovitis

  • Bursitis (including retrocalcaneal bursitis)

  • Joint effusions and synovitis

  • Early or established arthritic changes

  • Soft tissue masses (e.g. cysts, ganglia, lipomas)

  • Over-use or sports-related injuries

  • Traumatic injuries

  • Localised swelling or oedema

What Can the Achilles Scan Detect?

A focused Achilles ultrasound assessment can detect:

  • Achilles tendinitis – inflammation and thickening of the tendon

  • Achilles tendinopathy – chronic degenerative changes in the tendon

  • Partial or full Achilles tendon tears

  • Insertional changes at the heel bone

  • Retrocalcaneal bursitis – inflammation and fluid between the tendon and heel bone

  • Soft tissue masses or ganglions around the Achilles region

  • In some cases, ultrasound may suggest stress-related changes in adjacent bone or soft tissues

Benefits of Having an Ankle & Achilles Scan at MedHealth

  • Same-day explanation of findings

  • High-quality images to support diagnosis and treatment planning

  • Reports suitable for GPs, physiotherapists, podiatrists and consultants

Ultrasound is widely recognised as an excellent tool for assessing ankle ligaments, tendons and soft tissues in real time, especially with dynamic movement.
