Same-day verbal results
Digital report within 24–48 hours
Performed by experienced MSK sonographers
High-resolution imaging for early detection
Objective of the Calf Scan
The aim of the Calf Ultrasound Scan is to provide a clear view of the key structures within the calf, including the gastrocnemius, soleus and Achilles tendon. The calf is made up of powerful muscles and connective tissues that are prone to strain, over-use injuries and sudden tears. Ultrasound allows us to assess these structures in real time to identify inflammation, tears, swelling or areas of concern.
The scan is completely safe, painless and does not involve radiation. Your results are explained to you immediately after the scan.
What the Calf Scan Can Assess
Gastrocnemius muscles
Soleus muscle
Achilles and calf tendons
Retrocalcaneal bursa
Calf soft tissues
Areas of swelling, inflammation or fluid
What Is a Calf Ultrasound Scan?
A calf ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the muscles and tendons in the lower leg. The main muscles assessed include:
Gastrocnemius
The large, superficial calf muscle responsible for pushing off when walking, running or standing on tiptoes.
Soleus
A deeper calf muscle that supports posture, balance and endurance-based movement.
Both muscles join to form the Achilles tendon, which attaches to the heel bone and is essential for ankle function.
Calf injuries are common in both active individuals and those who experience sudden overstretching or repetitive strain. Ultrasound provides rapid, accurate information about the extent and type of injury.
Why Might I Need a Calf Scan?
You may need a calf scan if you experience:
Calf pain (especially when walking or running)
Acute injury or sudden onset pain
Reduced movement or stiffness
Localised swelling
A lump or visible deformity
Symptoms following sports activity
Post-surgical concerns
Possible foreign body in the soft tissues
A scan can identify whether the source of pain comes from muscle, tendon, bursa or surrounding soft tissues.
What the Calf Scan Can Detect
Our high-resolution calf ultrasound can identify:
Calf muscle strains
Calf muscle tears
Achilles tendinosis and thickening
Retrocalcaneal bursitis
Soft tissue masses (e.g., cysts, hernias, tumours)
Tennis leg (plantaris rupture)
Muscle herniation
Inflammation or fluid collection
Over-use injuries
Traumatic injury
Post-operative complications
Foreign bodies
Localised swelling or oedema
