Benefits of a Combined Abdominal & Pelvic Ultrasound Scan

A combined scan assesses both the upper abdominal organs (such as the liver, gallbladder, pancreas and kidneys) and the pelvic organs (such as the uterus, ovaries and bladder). This provides a more complete view of your internal health and can be especially helpful when symptoms could relate to multiple areas.

Choosing MedMobile means fast access to appointments, clear explanations, and supportive care throughout your scan.

With MedMobile you can expect:

  • No waiting lists – prompt appointments at times that suit you

  • NHS-trained, highly experienced sonographers

  • Advanced imaging technology for clarity and accuracy

  • A clear verbal explanation of your results straight away

  • A detailed written report sent securely to you and/or your GP

  • Comfortable, private scanning rooms focused on your dignity and wellbeing

This scan is commonly used to investigate abdominal and pelvic symptoms, to monitor known conditions, or for reassurance and routine health checks.

Why Might I Need This Scan?

A combined abdominal and pelvic scan may be recommended if you are experiencing:

  • Lower abdominal or pelvic pain

  • Bloating or abdominal fullness

  • Changes in bowel or bladder habits

  • Irregular or heavy periods

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Urinary frequency or discomfort

  • Unexplained changes in body or hormone patterns

It may help detect or monitor conditions such as:

  • Gallstones or liver inflammation

  • Kidney stones or urinary issues

  • Ovarian cysts or PCOS

  • Uterine fibroids

  • Endometrial lining changes

  • Inflammation or structural changes within the pelvis

You may also choose this scan for general health reassurance.

What Happens During the Scan?

  • You will be made comfortable in a private clinical room.

  • A small amount of ultrasound gel is applied over the abdomen.

  • A handheld ultrasound probe is gently moved across the skin to examine the abdominal organs.

  • If a transvaginal pelvic scan is recommended (for clearer pelvic detail), this will be explained sensitively and performed only with your consent.

  • The scan typically takes 15–20 minutes.

  • Your sonographer will explain your results immediately.

  • A written medical report will follow shortly after.

The scan is safe, non-invasive, and pain-free.

How to Prepare

For the Abdominal Portion:

  • Avoid eating for at least 6 hours before your appointment.

  • You may drink water or clear fluids.

  • Take your regular medications as normal.

For the Pelvic Portion (Transabdominal):

  • Please arrive with a comfortably full bladder.

  • Drink around 0.5 litres of water 30 minutes before your scan.

  • Try not to empty your bladder before the appointment.
