Elbow Ultrasound Scan
Elbow Ultrasound Scan – MedHealth Ultrasound
The MedHealth Elbow Ultrasound provides a detailed, non-invasive assessment of the key musculoskeletal structures within the elbow and forearm. This quick, safe scan is ideal for patients experiencing pain, restricted movement or suspected soft-tissue injury.
What does the Elbow Ultrasound include?
Same-day verbal findings
Digital written ultrasound report within 24–48 hours
Performed by qualified MSK sonographers
Designed to identify issues early and guide management
Objective of the Elbow Ultrasound
The aim of the elbow ultrasound is to assess the major structures that support and move the elbow joint, including tendons, ligaments, muscles, the joint recess and surrounding soft tissues. The elbow is a complex hinge joint, and injury or overuse can result in pain, swelling, stiffness and reduced function.
This scan offers a clear, real-time look inside the elbow using high-frequency sound waves. It is quick, painless and completely safe, and findings are discussed with you immediately after the scan.
What the Elbow Ultrasound Can Assess
Extensor tendons
Flexor tendons
Biceps tendon
Triceps tendon
Ulnar collateral ligament
Elbow joint space
Olecranon bursa
Soft-tissue swelling or fluid
Post-injury changes
Restricted movement
What is an Elbow Ultrasound?
An elbow ultrasound is a diagnostic scan that visualises soft-tissue structures within the elbow and proximal forearm. It can identify inflammation, tendon injury, ligament damage, fluid collections, nerve irritation and joint changes.
Both acute injuries (e.g., falls, impact) and chronic overuse conditions (e.g., tennis elbow, repetitive strain) can be evaluated accurately.
Reasons for an Elbow Ultrasound
You may benefit from an elbow ultrasound if you have:
Elbow pain or discomfort
Recent injury
Reduced or painful movement
Swelling or inflammation
A lump or soft-tissue mass
Suspected tendonitis or bursitis
Post-operative swelling or suspected complication
Rheumatoid arthritis flare or monitoring
Possible foreign body (e.g., metal, wood, glass)
What Can the Elbow Ultrasound Detect?
Our elbow ultrasound can help diagnose:
Tendonitis / tendinopathy
Muscle or tendon tears
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis)
Bursitis
Ligament sprains or tears
Overuse injuries
Soft-tissue masses or cysts
Joint inflammation or effusion
Trauma-related injury
Early signs of arthritis
Nerve irritation or compression
Progression or improvement during treatment
