Fertility Scan

Book now

Our fertility ultrasound is a detailed, high-resolution transvaginal scan designed to assess the health of the female reproductive system and identify factors that may influence fertility. This scan provides valuable insight into the uterus, endometrium (womb lining), ovaries and ovarian reserve (often referred to as your ‘egg count’), giving you information that can support family planning or ongoing fertility care.

The scan is carried out by an experienced sonographer using transvaginal ultrasound for the most accurate and detailed view. You will receive a clear explanation of the findings during your appointment, followed by a secure digital report sent to you within 24 hours. A same-day priority reporting option is also available.*

This scan can help identify potential concerns that may affect fertility, such as low ovarian reserve, fibroids or ovarian cysts, as well as provide reassurance of healthy anatomy.

What Does the Fertility Scan Assess?

  • Follicle count / ovarian reserve

  • Ovarian appearance and overall ovarian health

  • Endometrial thickness and structure

  • Uterus shape and any structural differences

  • Fibroids

  • Polycystic ovaries

  • Ovarian and pelvic cysts

  • Ovarian tumours

  • Endometriosis indicators

  • Adenomyosis

  • Polyps

  • Fluid in the pelvis

  • Possible hydrosalpinx (fluid-filled / blocked fallopian tube)

  • Position of IUD / IUS / contraceptive coil

  • Other conditions that may impact conception

Why Might I Need a Fertility Scan?

  • A fertility ultrasound helps assess the reproductive organs and may be recommended if you are:

  • Preparing for fertility treatment such as IVF or ICSI (UK or abroad)

  • Tracking ovulation or follicle development

  • Experiencing irregular, absent or very heavy periods

  • Having pelvic pain, discomfort or pain during intercourse

  • Monitoring known conditions such as PCOS, fibroids or ovarian cysts

  • Seeking reassurance or a general gynaecological health check

This scan may include assessment of:

  • Uterus (womb)

  • Ovaries and ovarian follicles

  • Endometrial thickness and appearance

  • Pelvic anatomy and structures

  • For assisted conception cycles, it may also help with:

  • Follicle tracking

  • Estimating ovulation timing

  • Planning treatment and embryo transfer windows

What Happens During the Scan?

  • Most fertility scans are performed transvaginally, as this gives the clearest and most detailed images.

  • You will be made comfortable in a private clinical room

  • A small, specially designed ultrasound probe is gently inserted into the vagina

  • The scan usually takes around 10–15 minutes

  • It is safe, routine and generally not painful

  • Results are discussed immediately afterwards

  • A written medical report is included with every scan.

How to Prepare

  • For a Transvaginal Scan (usually recommended):

  • You do not need a full bladder

  • You may be asked to empty your bladder beforehand

  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the pelvic area

  • For a Transabdominal Scan (if requested):
