Follicle Tracking Scan
Benefits of a Follicle Tracking Scan
A follicle tracking scan can be extremely helpful for individuals or couples who are trying to conceive, either naturally or with medical support. By monitoring how your follicles develop throughout your cycle, the scan provides valuable information to help identify when ovulation is most likely to occur. This can support the timing of intercourse, intrauterine insemination (IUI), or treatment decisions in assisted conception.
Why Follicle Tracking Can Be Helpful
Helps identify your most fertile window
Supports natural conception or timed intercourse
Assists your clinician in planning IUI or IVF
Checks that follicles are developing and maturing as expected
Measures the womb lining (endometrium) to assess readiness for implantation
For individuals undergoing fertility treatment, follicle tracking is often essential to guide medication timing and to determine the optimal point for egg collection.
Why Choose a Private Follicle Tracking Scan
Accurate and Detailed
We use high-resolution ultrasound equipment to provide clear, reliable measurements of follicle growth and endometrial thickness. Your scan is performed by experienced sonographers who specialise in reproductive and pelvic ultrasound imaging.
Timely and Flexible Appointments
Follicle tracking is time-sensitive. We offer appointments that can be made at short notice and provide results promptly, helping you or your clinic make decisions without delay.
Comfort and Personalised Care
Some follicle tracking scans are performed transvaginally for the most accurate detail. We ensure the process is explained clearly, carried out gently, and that your privacy and comfort are prioritised at every stage.
Convenience
Our clinic operates with short waiting times and flexible availability, including weekends where required, making scheduling easier around work, travel, or treatment plans.
Why You May Be Referred for a Follicle Tracking Scan
You may have a follicle tracking scan if you are:
Trying to conceive naturally and want to identify your fertile window
Unsure whether you are ovulating regularly
Planning or currently undergoing IUI or IVF
Using medication to stimulate ovulation
Have been trying to conceive for 6–12 months without success
Natural Cycle Tracking
The scan helps you understand when ovulation is approaching, supporting the timing of intercourse for the best chance of conception.
Ovulation Assessment
The scan checks whether your follicles are maturing and whether ovulation is actually taking place.
IVF Monitoring
During IVF treatment, the ovaries are stimulated to produce multiple follicles. A series of scans (usually 2–4) monitor follicle growth so that egg collection can be timed precisely.
What to Expect During the Scan
You will be guided to uncover the area being scanned (wearing loose, comfortable clothing is helpful).
A small amount of ultrasound gel is applied to the skin.
The ultrasound probe is placed and gently moved to obtain images.
The scan typically takes 10–15 minutes and is not painful.
You will receive a clear verbal explanation of the findings before you leave, with the option to ask any questions.
How to Prepare
Transvaginal (Internal) Scan
This type of scan is often recommended as it gives the most accurate detail of follicle development.
No full bladder is needed
You may be asked to empty your bladder before the scan
Wear clothing that allows comfortable access to the pelvic area
Transabdominal (Over the Tummy) Scan
A comfortably full bladder is required
Drink approx. 0.5 litres of clear fluid 30 minutes before your appointment
Try not to empty your bladder before the scan
If you are unsure which type of scan is most appropriate, our team can advise you based on your cycle stage and treatment plan.
