Hip Ultrasound Scan
Hip Ultrasound Scan – MedHealth Ultrasound
The MedHealth Hip Ultrasound provides a detailed evaluation of the soft-tissue structures around the hip and upper thigh, including muscles, tendons, bursae and joint recesses. This scan is ideal for patients with hip pain, groin pain, reduced movement, swelling, or suspected soft-tissue injury.
What does the Hip Scan include?
Same-day verbal results
Digital written report within 24–48 hours
Performed by highly experienced MSK sonographers
Early detection of soft-tissue and joint problems
Objective of the Hip Ultrasound
The hip ultrasound aims to assess the soft-tissue structures surrounding the hip joint and upper thigh. Although the hip contains significant bony anatomy, many common causes of hip pain originate from tendons, muscles, bursae and soft-tissue inflammation — all of which can be clearly visualised on ultrasound.
The scan is quick, painless, and completely safe, and results will be explained to you immediately after your appointment.
What the Hip Scan Can Assess
Hip joint recess (fluid/effusion)
Femoral head and neck surface
Surrounding tendons and muscles
Trochanteric bursa
Iliopsoas bursa
Gluteal tendons
Soft-tissue swelling
Superficial masses or lumps
Haematomas
Neurovascular structures (limited)
What is a Hip Ultrasound?
A hip ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to examine the soft tissues around the hip area. Although the hip joint itself contains deep bony structures, ultrasound is extremely effective at identifying:
Soft-tissue injury
Tendon tears or tendinopathy
Muscle strains
Gluteal tendon pathology
Trochanteric pain syndrome
Inflammatory conditions
Bursitis (trochanteric or iliopsoas)
Synovial inflammation
Fluid and swelling
Joint effusions
Haematomas
Soft-tissue swelling
Post-injury changes
Acute trauma
Overuse irritation
Post-surgical complications
Ultrasound is commonly used when hip pain persists despite a normal X-ray, as it can identify soft-tissue abnormalities that may not be seen on other imaging.
Reasons to Have a Hip Ultrasound
You may benefit from a hip scan if you have:
Hip pain or stiffness
Groin pain radiating into the thigh
Outer-hip pain or tenderness
Reduced movement
Pain when walking, climbing stairs or lying on your side
Hip or thigh swelling
Suspected bursitis
Buttock or lateral thigh pain
A lump or soft-tissue mass
Post-surgical swelling or unresolved discomfort
Suspected haematoma after injury
Unclear findings following an X-ray
What the Hip Scan Can Detect
Our hip ultrasound can help diagnose:
Trochanteric bursitis
Iliopsoas bursitis
Gluteal tendinopathy or tears
Muscle tears (thigh or hip girdle)
Soft-tissue injuries
Traumatic swelling or haematoma
Inflammation around the hip joint
Joint effusion (fluid in the joint)
Overuse injuries
Early arthritic changes (soft-tissue correlation)
Localised lumps, cysts or masses
Infection indicators (where visible)
