Knee Ultrasound Scan
Knee Ultrasound Scan – MedHealth Ultrasound
The MedHealth Knee Ultrasound provides a detailed assessment of the key soft-tissue structures within the knee using high-resolution ultrasound technology. This scan is ideal for patients experiencing pain, swelling, reduced movement, or suspected ligament or tendon injury.
What does the Knee Scan include?
Same-day verbal results
Digital report on the same day
Performed by experienced MSK sonographers
Designed to detect problems early and guide your recovery
Objective of the Knee Ultrasound
The knee ultrasound aims to evaluate the major tendons, ligaments, soft tissues, and joint spaces that support and stabilise the knee. Because the knee is the body's largest weight-bearing joint, it is particularly vulnerable to injury, degeneration and overuse — from everyday activity through to higher-impact sports.
Using ultrasound, we can visualise structures in real time, assess painful areas dynamically, and identify inflammation, fluid, degeneration or structural changes.
The test is quick, painless and completely safe, and results are discussed with you immediately.
What the Knee Ultrasound Can Assess
Quadriceps tendon
Patellar tendon
Medial collateral ligament (MCL)
Lateral collateral ligament (LCL)
Biceps femoris tendon
Prepatellar and infrapatellar bursa
Joint recesses for fluid/effusion
Soft-tissue swelling, cysts or lumps
Baker’s cyst (behind the knee)
What is a Knee Ultrasound?
A knee ultrasound is a diagnostic scan that uses high-frequency sound waves to evaluate the key structures around the knee joint.
It is especially useful for identifying:
Tendon and ligament injuries
Swelling and inflammation
Bursitis
Tendinosis
Cysts and lumps
Post-injury changes
Overuse conditions such as runner’s knee or jumper’s knee
Both acute injuries (falls, sports trauma) and chronic problems (long-term pain, repetitive strain, early arthritis) can be assessed accurately.
Reasons to Have a Knee Ultrasound
You may benefit from a knee ultrasound if you have:
Knee pain
Sudden or gradual knee injury
Reduced mobility or stiffness
Reduced stability or “giving way”
Swelling or inflammation
A lump or fluid collection
Post-surgical swelling
Suspected tendonitis or bursitis
Possible foreign body (e.g., wood, metal, glass)
What the Knee Scan Can Detect
The MedHealth knee ultrasound can help diagnose:
Soft-tissue & ligament problems
Sprains or tears
Tendonitis / tendinopathy
Quadriceps or patellar tendon injury
Collateral ligament injury
Iliotibial (IT) band friction
Fluid & inflammation
Joint effusion
Prepatellar or infrapatellar bursitis
Pes anserine bursitis
Baker’s cyst and cyst tracking
Overuse & degenerative changes
Patellar tendinosis (jumper’s knee)
Early arthritis or inflammatory changes
Meniscal irritation (limited assessment)
Repetitive strain injuries
Other findings
Soft-tissue masses or cysts
Trauma-related swelling
Restricted movement patterns
Gout or inflammatory crystal deposits (indirect signs)
Benefits of a Knee Ultrasound
Safe and non-invasive
No radiation, no needles (unless having a guided injection).
Real-time imaging
We can assess movement, tendon tracking, and pain responses while the joint is in motion.
High-resolution detail
Ideal for detecting subtle inflammation, tendon thickening, bursitis and early structural changes.
Cost-effective alternative to MRI
Immediate access with no long waiting lists.
No preparation required
Simply wear loose clothing around the knee.
