Ovarian Screening Scan
Our ovarian screening scan is a detailed ultrasound assessment designed to examine the ovaries and surrounding pelvic structures. It provides a clear view of ovarian health and can help identify conditions early, including cysts, polycystic ovaries and other abnormalities. This scan is often chosen for general reassurance, symptom investigation (such as pelvic pain or bloating), or as part of routine women’s health checks.
The scan is performed using transvaginal ultrasound, which offers the highest level of detail for this area. Your sonographer will discuss the key findings with you during the appointment, and a secure digital report will be sent to you within 24 hours. A same-day priority report option is also available.*

Benefits of an Ovarian Cancer Screening Ultrasound
An ovarian cancer screening scan is used to assess the ovaries, womb lining (endometrium) and surrounding pelvic structures. It can help detect abnormalities at an early stage, monitor symptoms, or provide reassurance if you have concerns or a family history of ovarian or gynaecological conditions.
This scan is often chosen by women who want a proactive approach to their health, particularly if symptoms have been present or risk factors are known.

Solid or mixed ovarian masses
Changes in ovarian size or appearance
Uterine fibroids

What Happens During the Scan?
Most ovarian screening scans are performed transvaginally, as this provides the clearest and most detailed view of the ovaries and pelvic structures.
You will be welcomed into a private clinical room
A small, specially designed ultrasound probe is gently inserted into the vagina
The scan usually takes about 10–15 minutes
It is typically not painful and is carried out with care and sensitivity
Your sonographer will explain your results immediately
A written report is provided after your scan
A transabdominal scan may also be performed where clinically appropriate.
Your comfort and dignity are at the centre of the process.
How to Prepare
For a Transvaginal Scan (recommended for best detail):
No full bladder needed
You may be asked to empty your bladder beforehand
Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the pelvic area
If a Transabdominal Scan is used:
Please arrive with a comfortably full bladder
Drink around 0.5 litres of water 30 minutes before your appointment
Try not to empty your bladder until after the scan
Your sonographer will guide you on the best approach at your appointment.
