Why do I need a Private Pelvic Ultrasound

A pelvic ultrasound has many applications depending on the reason for the investigation and is an important tool for detecting and monitoring medical conditions related to the female reproductive organs including the womb and ovaries and can help in the diagnosis and management of a range of health issues.

Ultrasound assessment of the pelvis may be used to investigate the following;

  • Size, shape and position of the uterus and ovaries

  • Presence of diseases such as fibroids and cysts

  • Presence of fluids or masses in the uterus, endometrium, myometrium (uterine muscle tissue), ovaries, fallopian tubes and pelvic area.

  • Length and thickness of the cervix

  • Blood flow

A pelvic ultrasound can provide substantial information about a pelvic mass including size, location and structure. However, it cannot provide a definite cancer diagnosis.

The ultrasound plays a crucial role in diagnosing and assisting in the treatment of various conditions, including;

  • Abnormalities in the structure of the uterus and endometrial conditions

  • Fibroids, cysts, masses and other types of tumours within the pelvis

  • The position and presence of an Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUD)

  • Infections like Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

  • Monitoring of the ovarian follicle size for infertility evaluation

  • Postmenopausal bleeding

  • Aspiration of follicular fluid and eggs from ovaries for in vitro fertilisation

  • Checking for ectopic pregnancy

  • Monitoring foetal development during pregnancy

  • Reassurance and peace of mind

  • General gynaecology check-up

  • Screening for ovarian cancer

  • Signs of adenomyosis

The pelvic scan can also assist with procedures like an endometrial biopsy or a sonohysterography to fill the uterus with fluid to distend it for better imaging.

What does the Private Pelvic Ultrasound involve?

During the scan, you will be asked to uncover the area being scanned, hence we advise to wear suitable loose clothing and a small amount of ultrasound gel will be placed over your skin.

An ultrasound camera (‘probe’) will then be placed on top and moved along and around the area. This results in a picture appearing on the ultrasound monitor and patient TV which will be translated by the clinical specialist/ medical practitioner.

The ultrasound scan itself usually lasts around 10-15 minutes and is pain-free. At the end of the scan, a verbal summary of the results will be provided, as well as your opportunity to ask any questions.

How do I prepare?

It's really important to arrive with the correct preparation as failure to do so may result in us not being able to perform the scan.

Full Bladder

Internal Scan

  • A comfortably full bladder is required for this scan – Please drink 0.5 litres of fluid approximately 30 minutes or so before your scheduled appointment and kindly try your best not to empty your bladder before the examination.

  • You may maintain your normal medication regime.

  • You can eat as normal.

  • An internal (Transvaginal) scan is recommended or may be mandatory for specific services instead of the scan over your tummy as it often provides greater detail and better information, please ask our customer care team for more information.

  • For internal scans you do not need to have a full bladder and will be asked to empty your bladder if full. Also please do arrive in clothing that can allow easy and comfortable access to your pelvic area.

  • For scans over your tummy (Transabdominal) then we recommend you arrive with a comfortably full bladder. Please drink 0.5 litres of clear fluid approximately 30 minutes or so before your scheduled appointment and kindly try your best not to empty your bladder before the examination.
