What Happens During the Scan?
You will be made comfortable in a private clinical room.
A small amount of ultrasound gel is applied to the abdomen for the abdominal scan.
Your pelvic scan may be carried out transabdominally and/or transvaginally, depending on image clarity and your preference.
To assess bladder emptying, you may be asked to use the bathroom and return briefly for a re-scan.
The scan typically takes 15–25 minutes and is safe and painless.
Your sonographer will explain your results immediately, followed by a written report.
Your comfort and privacy remain central throughout.
How to Prepare
For the Abdominal Portion:
Avoid eating for around 6 hours before your appointment.
You may drink water or clear fluids.
Take all regular medication as usual unless advised otherwise.
For the Bladder/Pelvic Portion (Transabdominal):
Please arrive with a comfortably full bladder.
Drink about 0.5 litres of water approximately 30 minutes before your appointment.
Try not to empty your bladder before the scan.
For a Transvaginal Scan (if recommended or preferred):
A full bladder is not required.
You may be asked to empty your bladder beforehand.
Your sonographer will discuss the most suitable approach on the day.

3 The Ultrasound Examination
Your scan will be carried out by an HCPC-registered sonographer using hospital-grade equipment. The process is completely safe, pain-free, and usually takes 10–25 minutes.
4 Immediate Feedback
Where possible, your sonographer will provide a clear summary straight after your scan.
5 Your Report
A detailed written report is prepared the same day. Reports are sent securely by encrypted email to you and, if applicable, to your GP or referring clinician. This ensures safe and confidential transfer of your medical information in accordance with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
6 After Your Scan
You can resume normal activities immediately - no recovery period is required.
