What Are Ovarian Cysts?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on or within the ovaries. They are relatively common and often harmless, but in some cases they can cause symptoms or require monitoring.

Many cysts resolve on their own, but if symptoms persist or worsen, further investigation is recommended.

Common Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts

Symptoms can vary depending on the size and type of cyst, but may include:

  • Pelvic pain or discomfort

  • Bloating or swelling in the lower abdomen

  • Pain during or after intercourse

  • Changes in menstrual cycle

  • A feeling of pressure or fullness

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, an ultrasound scan can help provide clarity.

How an Ultrasound Helps

Ultrasound is the primary imaging method used to assess ovarian cysts. It is safe, non-invasive and provides real-time images of the pelvic area.

During your scan, we can:

  • Identify the presence of cysts

  • Assess their size and structure

  • Distinguish between different types of cysts

  • Monitor any changes over time

You will receive a clear explanation during your appointment, along with a detailed written report.

Our Scan Appointment

What to expect at your appointment:

Most appointments last around 45 minutes, depending on complexity. Depending on your symptoms and with your consent, the scan may include a transabdominal scan over the lower tummy and a transvaginal scan for higher-resolution detail. You are always in control, and the scan can be paused or declined at any stage.

Preparation

You may be asked to attend with a comfortably full bladder for the first part of the scan. If an internal scan is performed, you may then be asked to empty your bladder. Full preparation details will be included in your booking confirmation.

Your report and next steps

You will receive a secure digital report, a clear explanation of the findings, and guidance on next steps if further assessment is recommended.
