What Does an Abdominal Ultrasound Examine?
Your sonographer will perform a systematic assessment of the major organs and structures within the upper abdomen.
The examination includes the:
Liver
The liver is assessed for its overall appearance, size and tissue characteristics.
Gallbladder & Bile Ducts
The gallbladder is examined for gallstones, sludge, polyps, inflammation and other abnormalities. The visible bile ducts are assessed for dilatation and other abnormalities.

The visible pancreas is assessed for its appearance and any identifiable abnormality.
Pancreas
Both kidneys are examined for their size and appearance and for abnormalities such as cysts, stones or obstruction.

The abdominal aorta — the main artery supplying the abdomen and lower body — is assessed for enlargement where appropriate.

What Happens During an Abdominal Ultrasound?
Your appointment usually takes approximately 20–30 minutes.
Before beginning the examination, your sonographer will discuss your symptoms, relevant medical history and the reason for your scan.
You will then lie comfortably on the examination couch and ultrasound gel will be applied to your abdomen.
The sonographer will gently move the ultrasound probe across different areas of your abdomen to obtain detailed images of the organs being examined. You may occasionally be asked to change position or hold your breath briefly to help obtain the clearest possible images.
The examination should not be painful, although some gentle pressure may be required over certain areas.
Where appropriate, your sonographer will explain the findings before you leave and answer any questions you may have.
Your detailed digital report will usually be provided the same day.
Preparing for Your Abdominal Ultrasound
Correct preparation helps us obtain the clearest possible images.
Please:
Do not eat for 6 hours before your appointment.
You may continue to drink water.
Please take your usual prescribed medication unless your healthcare professional has advised you otherwise.
Fasting helps the gallbladder remain appropriately distended and can improve visualisation of the upper abdominal organs.
If you have a medical condition that makes fasting difficult or unsafe, please contact us before your appointment for advice.
What Happens if Something Is Found?
Most ultrasound findings are not emergencies, and many are benign.
If your scan identifies an abnormality, your sonographer will explain the findings to you where appropriate and document them clearly in your report.
Depending on the findings, we may recommend that you discuss the report with your GP or another healthcare professional.
Occasionally, further investigation such as blood tests, CT, MRI or specialist assessment may be recommended.
Your report can be shared with your GP or consultant to support the next stage of your care.
What Are the Limitations of Abdominal Ultrasound?
Ultrasound is an excellent first-line examination for many abdominal conditions, but no imaging test can identify every possible cause of abdominal symptoms.
Some structures can be difficult to visualise because of their position within the body or overlying bowel gas. This particularly affects assessment of the pancreas in some patients.
Ultrasound also does not provide a complete assessment of the stomach or bowel and cannot reliably exclude every serious abdominal condition.
If your symptoms persist despite a normal ultrasound, you should seek appropriate medical advice. Your GP or another healthcare professional may recommend further investigation.
