What Does the Scan Examine?
Musculoskeletal ultrasound is most useful for assessing superficial soft-tissue structures. The exact examination will depend on your symptoms and the area selected when booking.
Thyroid Gland
Assessment may include the rotator-cuff tendons, long head of biceps tendon and subacromial-subdeltoid bursa. This may help investigate suspected tendinopathy, bursitis or a tendon tear.
Cervical Lymph Nodes
Accessible tendons, ligaments and surrounding soft tissues can be assessed for conditions including tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow and tendon injury.
Salivary Glands
Ultrasound may help assess tendons, tendon sheaths, joints, ganglion cysts and other superficial lumps or swellings.
Neck Lumps and Swellings
Selected superficial tendons and bursae around the hip can be examined for conditions including gluteal tendinopathy and bursitis. Deeper structures within the hip joint may require MRI.

What Happens During a Thyroid and Neck Ultrasound?
Before your scan, your sonographer will discuss your symptoms, medical history and the reason for your examination.
You will lie comfortably with your neck gently extended. Ultrasound gel is applied to the skin and the probe moved carefully over the front and sides of your neck.
The thyroid gland and surrounding neck structures will be assessed. Any nodules, cysts or other areas of concern will be examined and measured, and Doppler ultrasound may be used to assess blood flow where appropriate. Relevant lymph nodes within the neck will also be assessed.
The examination is painless and usually takes around 20 minutes.
Your findings will be explained where appropriate, and your detailed digital report will usually be provided the same day.
