What an MSK ultrasound can help with
Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound is a real-time scan used to assess tendons, ligaments, muscles, bursae and fluid/inflammation around joints.
It’s commonly used for:
Suspected tendon tears or tendinopathy
Bursitis and inflammation
Sprains, strains and sports injuries
Swelling, fluid collections, and soft-tissue lumps
Ongoing pain affecting training, work, or sleep
You’ll leave with clarity and a plan — not vague reassurance.
Areas we commonly scan
Shoulder & arm
Rotator cuff / impingement
Biceps tendon
Tennis elbow / golfer’s elbow
Wrist/hand tendons and pain
Hip, knee & leg
Gluteal tendons / lateral hip pain
Quadriceps / patellar tendon
Hamstring / calf strains
Knee soft tissues (tendons, bursae, fluid)
Ankle & foot
Achilles tendon
Plantar fascia (plantar fasciitis)
Ankle ligament injuries
Peroneal tendons
Lumps & soft tissue
Lipomas / cysts (assessment and characterisation)
Ganglion cysts (commonly wrist/hand)
If you’re unsure whether ultrasound is the right test for your symptoms, ask — we’ll be honest if another pathway is more suitable.
When it’s worth booking
Consider an MSK scan if you have:
Pain lasting more than 2–3 weeks
A sports injury with swelling, reduced movement, or weakness
A suspected tendon tear or sudden loss of function
Recurring pain that keeps coming back with activity
A new lump/swelling you want assessed
What happens at your appointment (20 minutes)
1) Quick history (2–3 minutes)
We’ll ask about your symptoms, injury mechanism, and what aggravates/relieves it.
2) Ultrasound scan (~15 minutes)
We assess the area in real time and compare with the other side if helpful.
3) Clear outcome
You’ll receive a written report with findings and practical next steps (for you, your GP, physio, or insurer).

FAQs
How accurate is MSK ultrasound?
It’s excellent for tendons, ligaments, muscles, bursae, and inflammation/fluid. Some deeper joint structures may require MRI — we’ll guide you based on your symptoms.
Do I get a report?
Yes — you’ll receive a clear written report.
Do I need a referral?
Most patients self-refer. If you have a referral, bring it or email it in advance.
What should I wear?
Loose clothing. For shoulder/hip scans, a vest top/shorts helps.
Ultrasound does not replace clinical examination. If you have severe pain, a red-hot swollen joint, fever, sudden neurological symptoms, or concern about fracture, seek urgent medical assessment.
